More Than Just a Presence: The Role of CST in Preventing Crime

When people think of security, they often picture someone standing still, observing. But the Gardant Community Safety Team (CST) redefines what it means to be a visible deterrent. Our officers are not just stationed in the community; they are part of it. Their role goes far beyond patrolling – they prevent, de-escalate, and protect. They are a visible, approachable, and familiar presence that brings calm to busy public spaces.

CST officers are trained to recognise early signs of anti-social behaviour (ASB) and step in before issues escalate. Whether it's breaking up a potential confrontation, engaging with individuals at risk, or simply being a calming influence in a tense environment, their proactive approach stops incidents before they begin. By building positive relationships with businesses, residents and vulnerable individuals, they become a trusted presence, often resolving situations without enforcement. This proactive engagement is one of our core strengths and is fundamental to effective community safety.
By enforcing Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) and using powers under the Community Safety Accreditation Scheme (CSAS), CST officers help reduce street drinking, aggressive behaviour, and intimidation. They also act on intelligence from local businesses and residents to respond to emerging concerns in real time. But it’s their daily human interactions – checking in on a regular face, guiding someone to support services, preventing a confrontation – that really make the difference.
Crime prevention isn’t just about stopping the act; it’s about stopping the conditions that lead to it. CST officers make our communities safer not just through enforcement, but through connection, visibility, and early intervention. That’s what we do.
